The Line: -- Over/Under:
Sloane Stephens and Marie Bouzkova meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Sloane Stephens is coming off a first match exit in Washington and has now lost four of her last six matches overall. In her last match, Stephens won just 48 percent of her total service points and was broken five times. Stephens had issues starting the year, but it looked like she was past them with deep runs in Madrid and the French Open. However, the hiccups have returned and it’s quite clear Stephens isn’t that high on confidence at the moment. Stephens has lost her opening match four times since Indian Wells. Stephens has lost four of her last five matches on hard court.
Marie Bouzkova is coming off a straight sets win over Leylah Annie Fernandez that took 13 games to decide. In the victory, Bouzkova won 68 percent of her first serve points and 73 percent of her second serve points. Bouzkova won 70 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her eight break points. Bouzkova got 59 percent of her first serves in play and saved her only break point in a match that took just over an hour to complete. When you include an ITF title and qualifying for this tournament, Bouzkova has won 16 of her last 18 sets played. Bouzkova has never beaten a top-10 player in her career. Bouzkova has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Stephens is capable of losing to anybody in her current form, as the unforced errors are piling up and the shoulders are often slumped. Stephens looks like the player she was to start the year when she lost to players outside of the top-100. With that said, Bouzkova usually fizzles out on the main tour in her second match, as she’s had real trouble sustaining success on this level. This is a favorable match for Stephens to get some confidence back and return to the player we’re used to seeing.
Nothing will shock me anymore with Stephens, but she should win this contest.
