Sloane Stephens and Sara Sorribes Tormo meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Charleston Open.
Sloane Stephens is coming off an early exit in Miami and has been sluggish to start the year overall, losing four of her last six matches. Stephens isn’t hitting her spots with confidence and is coming off a match in which she won just 48 percent of her total service points. Stephens has lost six of her last eight sets and can’t possibly be the confident, bouncy player she usually is in tournaments. The good news is the last time Stephens was in Charleston back in 2016, she ended up winning the tournament, dropping just one set in the process. Stephens has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
Sara Sorribes Tormo is coming off a straight sets win over Fanny Stollar that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Sorribes Tormo won 70 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Sorribes Tormo won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 12 break points. Sorribes Tormo was very consistent with her serve and ended up winning each of the first six games of the match. If Sorribes Tormo can bottle that performance, she has a chance to pull off the upset here. Sorribes Tormo has a chance to win two straight matches on the main tour for the first time since Auckland. Sorribes Tormo has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
It’s hard to back Stephens given her current form, but it’s only a matter of time before she bounces back and she’s comfortable in this tournament. Sorribes Tormo hasn’t had a ton of recent success on the main tour and doesn’t have a career win over a top-10 player. While there’s obvious reasons to fade Stephens, this match is one she should win in hopes of righting the ship.
I’ll take Stephens in straight sets.
