Sofia Kenin and Alize Cornet meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Hobart International.

Sofia Kenin is coming off a straight sets win over Kirsten Flipkens that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Kenin won 75 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Kenin won 66 percent of her total service points and produced four breaks on 12 break points. Kenin has won all six of her sets this tournament and gives herself a chance to continue moving on if she once again gets 60-plus percent of her first serves in play. You can see the confidence growing in the 20-year-old Kenin, as this has a chance to be the biggest moment of her young career. Kenin has a chance to make her first ever WTA singles final appearance. Kenin has split her last eight matches on hard court.

Alize Cornet is coming off a straight sets win over Greetje Minnen that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Cornet won 69 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Cornet won 60 percent of her total service points and produced five breaks on eight break points. Cornet also hasn’t dropped a set this tournament and has also lost just a combined five games in her last three sets. Question the competition all you’d like, but Cornet is playing as well as she has in quite some time. Cornet has a chance to make her 13th career final appearance and second at the Hobart International. Cornet has won four of her last five matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in Cincinnati of last year, a match Cornet won in straight sets. The match took 16 games to be decided.

It’s tough to go against Kenin in this spot when you consider she probably wants it more and has played well enough to make her first final appearance. However, experience matters at this point in the tournament and it’s easier to trust Cornet’s nerves over the younger player who turned 20 years old a couple of months ago. Cornet loves these courts and hasn’t come close to dropping a set, let alone a match.

I like Cornet to make her 13th career final appearance.

Pick:
Alize Cornet
