The Line: -- Over/Under:
American tennis star, Sofia Kenin has made it into the second round of the 2019 WTA French Open. At this stage of the competition, Sofia Kenin will face Bianca Andreescu from Canada.
Sofia Kenin won her opening round match in 3 sets. It was a tricky match for the American as she lost the middle set but Kenen managed to do enough to win the overall match. During the win, Sofia Kenin impressed with her receiving. Kenin won 54% of her receiving points which allowed her to win 9 break points. While the receiving was impressive, Kenin had some issues with her serve as she lost 6 service games. It is safe to assume that clay is not the best surface for Kenin as she has struggled in recent weeks. Kenin has a 50% win rate on clay in 2019 which shows that she is not very comfortable on this surface.
On the other side of the coin, Bianca Andreescu enters this match having beaten Marie Bouzková in 3 sets in the opening round. It was a close opening round match which spanned over 2 days. Similar to Kenin, Andreescu was very impressive which receiving as she won 9 return games. Bianca Andreescu also had issues with her serving as she conceded 8 service games. This is the first clay court tournament in 2019 for Bianca Andreescu and it seems like she is not well adjusted to the surface at Roland Garros.
Sofia Kenin and Bianca Andreescu have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2017 where Bianca Andreescu won in straight sets.
Neither Sofia Kenin nor Bianca Andreescu looked very dominant in the opening round which gives this match the potential to be a close contest. Kenin has struggled on clay in 2019 which Bianca Andreescu has not played much tennis on this surface. As far as picking a winner is concerned, I am going to side with Sofia Kenin. Bianca Andreescu has not played on clay prior to Roland Garros and she seems to lack the knowledge and experience required to succeed on this success. Kenin has played the full clay season and I see her having enough to beat Andreescu.
