Sofia Kenin and Bianca Andreescu meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.

Sofia Kenin is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Kenin won 71 percent of her first serve points and 32 percent of her second serve points. Kenin won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her five break points. Kenin got 73 percent of her first serves in play and saved nine of her 11 break points. Kenin has won eight of her nine sets this tournament and has produced a combined a 19 breaks. Eight of Kenin’s last 12 victories have been decided in straight sets. Kenin hopes to make her fourth career final appearance, all of which have taken place this year. Kenin has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

Bianca Andreescu is coming off a three sets win over Karolina Pliskova that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Andreescu won 67 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Andreescu won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 18 break points. Andreescu got 62 percent of her first serves in play and saved three of her six break points. Andreescu has won all four of her matches this tournament in three sets and she was battling a leg injury through the final set of her most recent match. It’s going to be interesting to see how Andreescu responds physically given the wear and tear to get to this point. Andreescu hopes to make her third career final appearance, all of which have taken place this year. Andreescu has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.

These two have split the previous two matches, as Andreescu won Miami this year in straight sets and Kenin won Acapulco of this year in three sets.

Andreescu has the crowd behind her, which is often key in these matches and could be the difference. The problem is Andreescu was hobbled in her last match and it’s going to be interesting to see how she responds with the adrenaline wearing off. Kenin has thrived in big matches all year and if Andreescu isn’t 100 percent, she’s not going to win this match.

Kenin is the safe play in this contest based on the questionable health of the Canadian.

Pick:
Sofia Kenin
