In the opening round of the 2019 WTA China Open, Sofia Kenin is set to play against Garbine Muguruza.

Sofia Kenin last played at the Wuhan Open where she was eliminated by Ashleigh Barty in the third round. It was a decent tournament for Kenin as she defeated the likes of Elise Mertens but the American was outplayed by Barty. Despite that result, Sofia Kenin enters this tournament in supreme form as she recently won the Guangzhou Open. Furthermore, Sofia Kenin also made the semifinals of both the Cincinnati Masters and the Rogers Cup. Kenin has established herself as an elite player and she will be very confident about her ability to make a big impact at this tournament.

On the other side of the court, Garbine Muguruza has been in terrible form. Muguruza was eliminated during the opening round of the Japan Open and US Open while only managing to make the second round of the Wuhan Open. Since the French Open, Garbine Muguruza has only won 1 match and the Spaniard looks extremely low on confidence as she takes the court. Garbine Muguruza was once one of the top players on the WTA tour but injuries have caused her to struggle in 2019 and she is finding it challenging to return to winning ways. This is a tough opening round fixture of Garbine Muguruza and it is hard to see the Spaniard finding the form to challenge Sofia Kenin.

This will be the first time that Garbine Muguruza and Sofia Kenin will be playing each other at a WTA event.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Sofia Kenin to win this match. Garbine Muguruza has looked in terrible form since the end of the clay-court season and the Spaniard simply lacks the confidence to compete. Sofia Kenin has been in outstanding touch and I see her being good enough to win this match in straight sets.
