Tennis | Mona Barthel vs Sofia Kenin
Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

American youngster, Sofia Kenin will take on Mona Barthel from Germany in the first round of the 2018 Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec City, Quebec.

Sofia Kenin had a really impressive run at the 2018 US Open as she managed to make it into the third round where she lost to world number 8, Karolina Pliskova. The performance at the US Open showed a turn around in form for the American as Kenin came into the event having only made it past qualifying at one tournament since Wimbledon. Having regained form at the US Open, Sofia Kenin will hope to get some wins since she is one of the higher seeds at the event so will have an easy draw for the early stages of the tournament. `

That being said, Sofia Kenin’s opponent, Mona Barthel enters this tournament following a very impressive run at the WTA 125K event in Chicago. Barthel lost in the first round at the US Open as she was outclassed by her opponent. Mona Barthel has not accomplished much in singles tennis at the WTA level and is more regularly competing in ITF tournament. This will be a huge test for Mona Barthel since she is playing a player who is a level above her usual opponents.

This will be the first time that Sofia Kenin and Mona Barthel play against each other at a WTA event.

While Mona Barthel enters this match having done extremely well at the WTA 125K event, she will know that she is playing this tournament in an entirely different league with much more accomplished opponents. Sofia Kenin is ranked almost 50 spots higher than Mona Barthel and there is a significant gap in skill between the players. Sofia Kenin is the better player and I see her winning this match with ease.
