Stan Wawrinka and Albert Ramos-Vinolas meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 French Open.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a four set win over Viktor Troicki that took 43 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 71 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka continues to hit his spots, as he’s had 50-plus winners in three of his four matches and is winning no less than 71 percent of his first serve points. However, Wawrinka is coming off a match in which he had 50 unforced errors, something he knows he has to trim if he hopes to make another run at a grand slam title. Wawrinka hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the sixth time in his career. Wawrinka has a shot at back-to-back semifinal appearances at the French Open.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas is coming off a straight sets win over Milos Raonic that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Ramos-Vinolas won 73 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Ramos-Vinolas is now the surprise of the tournament as he simply blasted a top-10 player in which he had just 13 unforced errors and lost 10 games. Ramos-Vinolas is just playing clean tennis, as he’s had less than 30 errors in three of his four matches and is getting 61 percent or better of his first serves in play. Ramos-Vinolas is gaining confidence right now and has won 14 of his last 20 sets played. This is the first career grand slam quarterfinal appearance for Ramos-Vinolas.
These two have met six times in the past, and Wawrinka has won all six meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Geneva Open, a match Wawrinka won in 14 games. This will be be the fifth time these two meet on clay court.
The head to head favors Wawrinka. The overall experience favors Wawrinka. I don’t give Ramos-Vinolas much of a shot to win this match, especially after he was just blasted in the Geneva Open.
Look for Wawrinka to advance to the French Open semifinals again.
