Stan Wawrinka vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas 2016 Geneva Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Stan Wawrinka and Albert Ramos-Vinolas meet in the round of 16 at the Geneva Open Tuesday.

Stan Wawrinka is just using this tournament to build some consistency before the French Open, as he’s lost three of his last four matches. Wawrinka is coming off a three set loss to Juan Monaco in the Rome Masters and has lost five of his last eight matches overall. Wawrinka just looks off right now and the unforced errors continue to pile up, adding to his current frustrations. Wawrinka should also be motivated for this tournament considering it does take place in Switzerland, so he will be the heavy crowd favorite. We all know what Wawrinka is capable of when in good form, but he has to make some clear tweaks in his game if he’s going to get out of this slump.

Albert Ramos-Vinolas is coming off a three set victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili and looks for a monster upset that will help him climb the rankings. Ramos-Vinolas has now won five of his last eight singles matches and is the round of 16 for the first time since Istanbul. Ramos-Vinolas has shown flashes of turning the corner this season, as he took Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to three sets in Madrid and beat Nick Kyrgios in Indian Wells. That shows Ramos-Vinolas has what it takes to be a top-40 player again, he just has to bring the consistency. Ramos-Vinolas did make the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open last season and is 3-1 in this tournament overall.

These two have played five times in the past, and Wawrinka has won all five meetings. The most recent match was in last years US Open, a match Wawrinka won in straight sets. Ramos-Vinolas has been able to win two sets against Wawrinka, and this will be the fourth time these two play on clay.

I’m not sure what’s wrong with Wawrinka, as he’s in lousy form and that’s not good with a major right around the corner. However, he’s clearly the better player here and has owned Ramos-Vinolas throughout his career.

Have to roll with Wawrinka even if he’s not playing well.
