Dan Evans vs. Stan Wawrinka
|Date & Time||Wednesday June 19, 2019, 8:30 AM (EDT)|
S. Wawrinka -175 / D. Evans +125
Swiss tennis superstar, Stan Wawrinka will begin his grass court season in London as he plays at the 2019 ATP Queen’s Club Championship. Stan Wawrinka’s first opponent will be Dan Evans from the United Kingdom.
Dan Evans has had an outstanding start to the grass court season as he has done well at both the Challenger Nottingham event and the Surbiton Trophy. Dan Evans won both tournaments which is a very impressive accomplishment and it means that the Brit will be extremely confident as he begins his campaign at the Queen’s Club. Evans has a very strong record on grass and it currently 10-0 on this surface in 2019. It is important to note that Dan Evans has not played against someone as accomplished as Wawrinka in recent weeks but the Brit should feel that he has some momentum to challenge the Swiss superstar.
On the other side of the coin, Stan Wawrinka enters this tournament following a successful French Open where he made it into the quarterfinals. During his French Open campaign, Wawrinka defeated the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas. During the clay court season, Stan Wawrinka also defeated Kei Nishikori at the Madrid Masters. It is fair to suggest that grass is Stan Wawrinka’s weakest surface but the Swiss master is greatly experienced and has shown that he can adapt. This will be a tough opening match since Dan Evans is in outstanding form but Wawrinka has the experience and skills to defeat any player.
Stan Wawrinka and Dan Evans have played each other twice in the past. Wawrinka is currently 2-0 against Evans. The most recent match between Stan Wawrinka and Dan Evans was earlier in the season at the Indian Wells Masters. Wawrinka won that match in 3 sets.
Considering Dan Evans’ recent form, it is hard to see him lose. That being said, I am picking Stan Wawrinka winning this match. Evans has been playing in Challenger tournament and while he has done well, he has not played against an opponent with the ability of Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka is amongst the top players in the world and having beaten Evans earlier in the season, I see him beating the Brit again.
