Stan Wawrinka vs Denis Shapovalov- 2/14/19 ATP Tour - Rotterdam Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Swiss tennis superstar, Stan Wawrinka is set to play the exciting Denis Shapovalov from Canada in the quarterfinals of the 2019 ATP Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands.

Denis Shapovalov won his previous fixture in straight sets as he beat Tomas Berdych. It was a comfortable win for Shapovalov as he returned exceptionally well by winning 47% of the points played during his opponent’s service games. Furthermore, Shapovalov also served well during the win as he hit 8 aces and won 89% of his service games. This is expected to be the first major challenge for Denis Shapovalov and he will have to be at his best if he wishes to compete with Stan Wawrinka.

On the other side of the court, Stan Wawrinka beat Milos Raonic in the previous round. It was a dominant display by Wawrinka as he beat the number 4 seed in straight sets. During the win, Stan Wawrinka served exceptionally well as he won close to 90% of his service points which allowed him to win all of his service games. Wawrinka has a very strong record at this event as he won the 2015 ATP Rotterdam title. With the setting favourable and good form under his belt, Stan Wawrinka will be very tough to beat.
Stan Wawrinka and Denis Shapovalov have played once in the past. The match was played in 2018 at ATP Japan where Denis Shapovalov won in straight sets.

Denis Shapovalov has been impressive in this tournament and he will be confident that he can beat Wawrinka having beaten him in Japan last season. That being said, I see Wawrinka winning this match. Stan Wawrinka is a much more accomplished player and he has more experience playing at Rotterdam considering his record at this venue. Looking at the respective players, Wawrinka looks to be playing the better tennis so I see him winning this match and making the semifinals of the tournament.
