The Line: -- Over/Under:
Swiss superstar, Stan Wawrinka, is set to play Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the 2018 ATP Japan Open.
Denis Shapovalov enters this match having won his opening round match in 3 sets against the number 8 seed, Hyeon Chung. It was a very solid win for Shapovalov as he only lost one service game while breaking Chung’s serve of 3 occasions. That being said, Shapovalov did hit 7 double faults and had a first serve percentage of only 63%. While Shapovalov didn’t lose many service games, he will look to improve this aspect of his game as Wawrinka is exceptional at capitalizing on second serves. Denis Shapovalov isn’t very experienced at playing in Asia and potential disadvantage to the Canadian.
In contrast, Stan Wawrinka is a hugely experienced player, especially at the Japan Open as he won this tournament in 2015. Wawrinka was impressive in his opening round match as he Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Wawrinka was serving exceptionally well as he won all of his service games winning over 80% of the points played on his serve. Wawrinka entered this tournament in good form having had a strong St Petersburg campaign and he looks to be hitting the ball very cleanly. With the experience of a past Japan Open title and good form, Stan Wawrinka will be hard to stop in this tournament.
This will be the first time that Stan Wawrinka and Denis Shapovalov will play each other at an ATP tennis event.
While Denis Shapovalov played well in his first match, I see him losing to Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka looks in exceptional form and has a lot more experience than his opponent. With titles in Asia under his belt, Wawrinka is set to be at an advantage. I see Stan Wawrinka winning and making the next round of the tournament.
