Verdasco vs. Wawrinka
|Date & Time||Monday August 29, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Stan Wawrinka and Fernando Verdasco meet in the first round of the 2016 US Open.
Stan Wawrinka enters the US Open in shaky form after splitting his last 10 matches. Wawrinka had quick exits in Cincinnati and the Wimbledon, and he must clean up his unforced errors if he’s going to make another deep grand slam run. Wawrinka is always a risky play because you’re never quite sure which player is going to show up, however, he has made at least the quarterfinals in his last three US Open appearances. Wawrinka hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 French Open. Wawrinka has won 10 of his last 14 matches on hard court.
Fernando Verdasco has to be feeling somewhat confident after making the quarterfinals in Winston-Salem and taking Nick Kyrgios to three hard sets in Atlanta. When Verdasco is able to control his power and is shotmaking, he’s a serious threat against just about anybody on tour. The problem, however, like Wawrinka, you’re never quite sure which Verdasco is going to show up and he usually has bad nerves when going against elite players. Verdasco has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Verdasco has split his last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have met five times in the past and Verdasco has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Aegon Championships, a match Verdasco won in straight sets. This will be the first match on hard court.
Wawrinka should have the big advantage on hard court in their first time playing on it. Wawrinka’s power and shotmaking fits well on this court over the ground game and wild play of Verdasco. Also, nobody has been able to beat the other two straight times.
