Stan Wawrinka vs Gael Monfils - 2/17/19 ATP Tour - Rotterdam Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

French tennis superstar, Gael Monfils is set to play against Swiss tennis legend, Stan Wawrinka in the final of the 2019 ATP Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands.

Stan Wawrinka had a big win in the previous round as he beat the top seeded player, Kei Nishikori. It was a close match but Wawrinka showed his class in the third set to secure the overall victory. During the win, Stan Wawrinka received exceptionally well as he 43% of his return points which allowed him to break Nishikori’s serve on 5 occasions. Stan Wawrinka is a very experienced player and he has won 3 Grand Slams in his career meaning he should be accustomed to playing on the big stage.

On the other side of the coin, Gael Monfils beat the number 5 seed, Daniil Medvedev, in the previous round. It was a big win for Monfils as he defeated a significantly higher ranked player in 3 sets. It was a very tight match where Monfils won 5 return games to secure the overall victory. It is important to note that Monfils struggled with his own serving as he lost 4 service games during the match. Wawrinka looks to be returning the ball very well so Gael Monfils must improve his serving if he wishes to compete in this match.

Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils have played 6 times in the past. As it currently stands, Wawrinka has won on 4 occasions while Monfils has won twice. The most recent match between these two players was in 2017 at the Davis Cup where Wawrinka won in straight sets.

With everything taken into consideration, I am going to pick Stan Wawrinka to win this match. Wawrinka is a much more accomplished player and he looks to be playing better tennis. Monfils has been struggling with his serve and I see that as a weakness that Wawrinka can exploit. With that in mind, I see Stan Wawrinka winning that match and the tournament.
