|Date & Time||Friday May 31, 2019, 10:00 AM (EDT)|
S. Wawrinka -250 / G. Dimitrov +200
Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka will play each other in the third round of the 2019 ATP French Open.
Stan Wawrinka was clinical in the previous round of the tournament as he defeated Christian Garin in 3 sets. It was a very quick win for Wawrinka as the match only lasted 23 games. During the win, Wawrinka served exceptionally well as he won 69% of his service points which led him to win all of his service games. Wawrinka also won 6 return games, to sum up, a very convincing win. Stan Wawrinka has a very good record at the French Open as he won the title in 2015. Wawrinka looks in good form and has a good record at this venue so he will be very confident as he enters this match.
On the other side of the coin, Grigor Dimitrov won a marathon battle in the second round as he defeated the number 11 seed, Marin Cilic, in 5 sets. It was an extremely close match with 40% of the sets being decided via a tiebreaker. During the win, Dimitrov served exceptionally well as the Bulgarian hit 15 aces which led him to win 66% of his service points. Dimitrov won 88% of his service games and 5 return games to eventually defeat Marin Cilic. This is the second successive 5 set match for Grigor Dimitrov which will bring fatigue into the equation. If Dimitrov can win this match early, he has an advantage but I can’t see how Dimitrov wins another 5 set contest.
Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov have played each other 8 times in the past. The head-to-head record is very even as both Dimitrov and Wawrinka have won on 4 occasions. Wawrinka and Dimitrov played twice in 2018 where Wawrinka won on both occasions. The matches were at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Both Wawrinka and Dimitrov look in decent form as they enter this match. As far as a winner is concerned, I am going to pick Stan Wawrinka. Dimitrov has had two very exhausting matches and I don’t see him having enough to beat another exceptional opponent. Wawrinka has been dominant throughout this tournament and I see him defeating Dimitrov.
