The Line -- Over/Under:
Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin Del Potro square off early in the second round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a four set win over Taylor Fritz that took about two and a half hours. In the victory, Wawrinka won 62 of 114 first serve points and racked up 48 winners and 41 unforced errors. Wawrinka didn’t play flawless tennis, as there were plenty of unforced errors, but he hit his winners when he needed most and showed up in a first set tiebreak. Wawrinka is what he is and mistakes are going to come with his style of play, but he must clean up his tennis if he hopes to make a deep tournament run.Wawrinka looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the ninth straight appearance. Wawrinka has won 10 of his last 14 matches on grass.
Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Stephane Robert that took an hour and a half. In huge victory, Del Potro won 43 of his 66 first serve points and racked up 30 winners and 18 unforced errors. Del Potro lost just six games in his opening match, and that has to provide a boatload of confidence for a guy who has been battling injuries and struggling with his form overall these past years. Del Potro needs to keep being aggressive at the net and getting off to strong sets in order to build momentum. Del Potro hopes to make a third round grand slam appearance for the first time since the 2013 Wimbledon. Del Potro has won nine of his last 12 matches on grass.
These two have played five times in the past and Del Potro has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2013 Estoril Open, a match Del Potro won in straight sets. Wawrinka’s wins came in 2008 and 2006.
Del Potro is still trying to find his form and hasn’t beaten a top-10 player since Richard Gasquet in the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals. Wawrinka is in good form for the most part and his shotmaking should be the difference here.
Give me Wawrinka in four sets.
