Stan Wawrinka and Taro Daniel square off in the second round of the 2016 French Open.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a five set win over Lukas Rosol that took 45 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 78 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka didn’t have the best performance, as he racked up 46 unforced errors and got just 63 percent of his first serves in play. However, Wawrinka was able to dig deep after being down a set twice, and he won the final two sets while losing just seven games. Wawrinka has been a little bit of up and down as of late, but he’s still going to be a tough out regardless. Wawrinka has surpassed the second round of a grand slam in his last seven appearances.
Taro Daniel is coming off a five set win over Martin Klizan once he retired three games into the final set. In the victory, Daniel won 67 percent of his first serve points and 44 percent of his second serve points. For a five set match, Daniel had only 29 unforced errors and seven aces. Easily the biggest win of Daniel’s young career, he continues to hang around being a top-80 player in the world and is simply picking up valuable experience in this tournament. Daniel has won six of his last 10 matches when you include qualifying, and he’ll enter this match with nothing to lose as an inexperienced 23-year-old. This is the first time Daniel has made it out of the first round of a grand slam.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Conditioning will play a part here with both guys coming off five set matches, but Wawrinka is easily the better player here and should be able to win in straight sets even if he’s in average form. Daniel hasn’t shown us anything in his career that makes me think he can even steal a set in this match.
Wawrinka to the third round.
