Stan Wawrinka and Tommy Robredo will meet in the fourth round of the 2014 US Open.
Despite being 32 year’s old, Tommy Robredo continues to impress, especially in the majors as he’s taken out some quality opponents. Robredo’s most recent quality elimination came in the third round after beating Nick Kyrgios in four sets. After dropping the first set, Robredo was able to win three straight and simply out smart the younger tennis player. In the victory, Tommy Robredo hit 33 winners, won 72 percent of his net points and had just 15 unforced errors. Robredo has really played some clean tennis in this tournament and has looked nothing like the guy who was eliminated by Nicolas Mahut in Winston Salem. Robredo can make it back-to-back US Open quarterfinal appearances with a victory here.
Stan Wawrinka will enter this match as fresh as he could possibly be after his third round opponent in Blaz Kavcic decided to withdraw from the tournament. So, Wawrinka has played only seven sets to get to this point and has had multiple days off to recover from his lengthy four set match victory over Thomaz Bellucci. Wawrinka has seemed to find his game at the right time after an up-and-down season since winning the Australian Open. Wawrinka has his speed back on his first serve, is moving around with confidence and is hitting winners left and right, as his last match produced 51 winners. When at the top of his game, Wawrinka is a threat to beat anybody, and he’s looking to reach the quarterfinal in five of his last seven majors with a win here.
These two have met eight times and Tommy Robredo leads the series, 6-2. However, Stan Wawrinka won their most recent match in this year’s Australian Open. Two of their last three meetings have gone the distance, while the other five matches were from 2008-04. This will be the fifth time the two have faced each other on hard court.
Despite Robredo’s great success over Wawrinka, I can’t pick against the player who has the rest advantage and who is playing better tennis at the moment.
