Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Roger Federer 2014 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer will meet in the 2014 Wimbledon quarterfinals to continue their lengthy rivalry.

Wawrinka looked better than expected in his three-set victory over Feliciano Lopez on Tuesday. Despite playing two matches in two days, Wawrinka has yet to lose a set in either, although he needed two tiebreaks to get by Lopez. In fact, Wawrinka has lost only set this entire tournament, as he is in clearly better form than he was at this year French Open. But while we know Wawrinka is the marathon man and has terrific endurance to last longer than he should, it’s going to be very interesting to see if he can complete the tall task of winning three matches in as many days. This is by far the furthest Wawrinka has been in the Wimbledon, and he’s looking to reach just his third Grand Slam semifinal of his career.

Federer is doing exactly what he should be doing if he has any hope of winning this tournament. He’s getting matches done quickly to save himself for the next match, as Federer has yet to lose a set. He only needed seven games to win the first set against Tommy Robredo, and he’s only needed one tiebreak this entire tournament. Unlike Wawrinka, Federer should be well rested for this match despite playing yesterday as well. Federer is looking a little like his old self, but this is when we truly find out if he still has something left in the tank. Federer has been eliminated in the Wimbledon quarterfinals twice in the last four years.

These two have played 15 times and Federer has won 13 of those matches. However, Wawrinka has won their most recent meeting in the 2014 Monte Carlo Masters. This will be their first ever match on grass.

It’s scary to bet against a pissed off Wawrinka, but given the insane scheduling, you almost have to go with Federer. Asking anybody to win three matches in three days is unfair. Due to the history between the two and the scheduling nonsense, give me Federer to win SU.
