The Line: -- Over/Under:
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Italian Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is coming off a final loss in the Madrid Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic in two sets that took an hour and a half to complete. Tsitsipas has clearly picked up where he left off at the end of last year, as he’s hitting the ball with great pace, serving well and forcing his opponent to work for every point. Tsitsipas has that extra pep in his step at the moment and you can see the confidence growing for a player who is still fresh to these big tournaments. The only question for Tsitsipas entering this tournament is fatigue, as he’s played nine matches this month and just played an emotional final that had to be mentally draining. Tsitsipas has lost his first match of a tournament just once since Dubai. Tsitsipas has won nine of his last 11 matches on clay court.
Jannik Sinner is coming off a three sets win over Steve Johnson that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Sinner won 70 percent of his first serve points and 45 percent of his second serve points. Sinner won 60 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his seven break points. Sinner managed to win a match despite dropping the first set in seven games and 22 minutes. Sinner took advantage of the break points and managed to produce a break when Johnson was serving for the match in the third set. Sinner is only 17 years old and has almost zero main tour experience, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the young Italian handles the pressure, especially with this being a home tournament. Sinner has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Sinner will have the crowd behind him and is playing with zero pressure or expectations. Tsitsipas could also be battling fatigue at this point with such a heavy workload. With that said, Sinner has never been on this stage before and has never played somebody like Tsitsipas. It takes time to be able to handle these sort of matches.
Tired or not, Tsitsipas should muscle his way to a straight sets win.
