S. Johnson +225 / A. Zverev -300
German tennis superstar, Alexander Zverev has made it into the second round of the 2019 ATP Halle Open. At this stage of the competition, Zverev will play against Steve Johnson from the United States.
Steve Johnson defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets in the first round. During the victory, Steve Johnson served very well. Johnson hit 13 aces and won 71% of his service points. That allowed Steve Johnson to win all of his service games. In addition to his serving, Steve Johnson also returned well as he broke his opponent’s serve on 3 occasions. Prior to arriving at Halle, Steve Johnson played at the Stuttgart Open where he was eliminated in the opening round. It was a tough clay court season for Steve Johnson as he only made a single quarterfinal. Throughout his career, Johnson has been very impressive on grass as he has won both the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and Nottingham Open. This will be a tough match for Johnson as he has been in poor touch and he is playing against the number 2 seed.
Alexander Zverev played against Robin Haase in the previous round. It was a simple victory for Zverev as he won the match in straight sets. During the victory, Alexander Zverev served exceptionally well. Zverev hit 12 aces and won over 70% of his first serve points. Alexander Zverev won 82% of his service games and 4 return games to secure a comfortable victory. Zverev has been in decent touch after making the quarterfinals of the French Open and winning the Geneva Open. The Halle Open is a strong tournament for Alexander Zverev as he finished second at this event in both 2016 and 2017. With Zverev’s form improving, the German superstar will be tough to defeat in this tournament.
Steve Johnson and Alexander Zverev have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2016 at the Miami Masters where Johnson won in straight sets.
Steve Johnson has a prior win against Zverev but the American has been in poor touch and his opponent is a significantly better player since their last meeting. Alexander Zverev has been looking in good form and he played exceptionally well in the opening round. Zverev is playing in his home country and I see him being too strong for Steve Johnson in this match.
