Taro Daniel and Gilles Simon meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Grand Prix Hassan.

Taro Daniel is coming off a three sets win over Adrian Menendez-Maceiras that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Daniel won 64 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Daniel won 64 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his nine break points. Daniel has prodded a combined 10 breaks in his first two matches and doesn’t look like the same player who entered this tournament with losses in six of his last eight tries. Daniel looks confident out there for the first time in a while. Daniel has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since Winston-Salem back in August. Daniel has split his last six matches on clay court.

Gilles Simon is coming off a straight sets win over Guido Andreozzi that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Simon won 76 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Simon won 70 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his six break points. Simon hasn’t dropped a set this tournament and has been serving at a very high level, which includes saving four of his five break points. Simon has to be thinking final appearance with the draw looking the way it currently does. Simon has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since winning the Moselle Open back in September. Simon has split his last four matches on clay court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Simon has played better tennis up to this point and his consistency with his serve will be the difference here. Daniel has ben up and down these past several months, and while he’s won his last two matches, it takes a bit more than that for me to trust a player who has struggled for a much longer period. With Simon serving the way he is, he should be considered the favorite to make the final in his side of the draw.

Simon wins this match, likely in straight sets.

Pick:
Gilles Simon
