The Line: -- Over/Under:
Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Auckland Open.
Taylor Fritz is coming off a straight sets win over John Isner that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Fritz won 79 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Fritz won 69 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Fritz went toe-to-toe with the best server in the game, as he hit 12 aces and managed to win two tiebreaks to prevail in a match that took over an hour and a half to complete. It’s Fritz’s second career win over a top-10 player and one that’s sure to give him a new level of confidence for the new season. Fritz has a chance to win three straight matches in a single tournament for the first time since Chengdu back in lat September. Fritz has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.
Cameron Norrie is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Norrie won 78 percent of his first serve points and 63 percent of his second serve points. Norrie won 74 percent of his total service points and managed to save all six of his break points. Norrie has managed to win each of his last six sets played and is getting an unreal percentage of his first serves in play. So far, Norrie looks like a different player than I remember seeing him to wrap up the 2018 season. Norrie has a chance to win three straight matches in a single tournament for the first time since Los Cabos in August. Norrie has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.
Theres no previous matches between these two players.
Both of these guys are playing some really good tennis at the moment, so this should be a tight battle that could possibly go three sets. I’m going to give the slight edge to Fritz in this match, as beating Isner in straight sets and doing it in tiebreaks is a hell of a confidence booster. There’s nothing Norrie can show Fritz serving wise that he didn’t just see and that’s a huge advantage going into this contest. Fritz grew up a little in his last showing.
I look for the American to reach the semifinals.
