Taylor Townsend and Bianca Andreescu meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis US Open.
Taylor Townsend is coming off a straight sets win over Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Townsend won 68 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Townsend won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. Townsend got 68 percent of her first serves in play and saved seven of her nine break points. It was a rather routine performance from Townsend, her first win of the tournament in straight sets, and it’s impressive coming off her win over Simona Halep. A lot of players usually fold in a match following the biggest win of their careers, but the 23-year-old American is proving she’s not a fluke and is ready to take that next step. Townsend looks to make her first career grand slam quarterfinal. Townsend has won nine of her last 10 matches on hard court.
Bianca Andreescu is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Wozniacki that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Andreescu won 64 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Andreescu won 58 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 17 break points. Andreescu got 66 percent of her first serves in play and saved one of five break points. Andreescu has won all six sets this tournament and has won nine straight matches overall. However, Andreescu has topped 30 unforced errors in two of her three matches in this event. Andreescu looks to make her first career grand slam quarterfinal. Andreescu has won 11 of her last 12 matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Andreescu is the more trustworthy player at this stage and has absolutely feasted on hard court this season. However, she’s also had a serious issues with unforced errors through three matches and that usually catches up if not corrected. Townsend has gotten far more consistent with her serve as of late and is playing to the US crowd very well. This match is a lot closer than it would have been if you asked about it before the tournament. And with the errors from the Canadian and the crowd on Townsend’s side, I’m leaning toward the American to make her first major quarterfinal.
