Teymuraz Gabashvili and Benoit Paire meet in the second round of the 2016 French Open.

Teymuraz Gabashvili is coming off a straight sets win over Donald Young that took 30 games to decide. After a first round tiebreak, Gabashvili really dominated Young in the final two sets and was hitting impressive winners. Gabashvili came into this tournament on a five-match losing streak, but a convincing win over a top-80 player has to provide confidence moving forward. Gabashvili has shown flashes of being a sneaky player in the past and given what we just saw, he can’t be overlooked in this match. Gabashvili has made it past the second round of a grand slam three times since 2014.

Benoit Paire is coming off a five set win over Radu Albot that took 45 games to decide. Paire didn’t look sharp at all in his opening match and even lost the fourth set 1-6. Paire came into this tournament in questionable form as he’s now lost four of his last six matches, and he’s never been great in grand slam appearances. However, for a guy who is flirting with being a top-20 player in the world, it’s time Paire starts being a little more consistent on the big stage. Paire needs a quick match if he wants to make a decent run in this tournament. Paire has been eliminated before the third round of a grand slam in five of his last seven appearances.

These two met once in the past, which was this year in Barcelona, a match Paire won in 20 games. This will obviously be the second time these two meet on clay court.

After what we saw in the first round, you almost want to pick Gabashvili for the upset. Although I’m going to give Paire the benefit of the doubt, especially with him having the big crowd support being from France.

Paire should have enough in the tank to get the big victory here and advance to the third round.
