Timea Bacsinszky and Svetlana Kuznetsova meet in the semifinals of the Miami Masters.
Timea Bacsinszky is coming off a three set victory over Simona Halep in which she battled back after dropping the first set. Bacsinszky now has five victories over top-10 players since last year and has won eight of her last 10 matches overall. Bacsinszky has now won back-to-back matches in which she’s beaten impressive competition despite dropping the first set. Bacsinszky is playing some of the best tennis of her career at the moment and would love nothing more than to have her breakthrough moment at a big tournament. This is Bacsinszky’s first appearance in the semifinals of a WTA Premier Mandatory Tournaments.
Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a marathon three set win over Ekaterina Makarova that will force her to get some serious rest before this match. Kuznetsova came into this tournament with little momentum but now has impressive wins over Makarova and Serena Williams. Kuznetsova may be the biggest surprise in what has been a surprise overall and weird tournament. Still, you have to give Kuznetsova credit, as she’s been showing terrific fight in all of her matches and simply wants it more than her opponent. It’ll be interesting to see if that can last for another match. Kuznetsova has reached the final of the Miami Masters once, which was in 2006 when she won the title.
These two have played twice in the past, and Kuznetsova has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2012 Indian Wells Masters, a match in which Bacsinszky retired in the second set. The other match was in the 2010 Canadian Masters. This will be the third time they meet on hard court.
The history between these two means little due to the matches being so long ago and the fact it’s only two matches anyway. With that being said, I still like Kuznetsova to come away with the victory. Kuznetsova has been in these spots before and has taken out impressive competition to get to this point.
Kuznetsova will reach the final in improbable fashion.
