Vania King and Serena Williams will meet in the second round of the 2014 US Open in a clash between two Americans.
Vania King won an up-and-down three set match over Francesca Schiavone in the first round to advance. Despite getting just 57 percent of her first serves in, King was able to win the first and third set by a score of 6-3. King was also able to overcome 21 unforced errors and the fact she didn’t have a single ace. Vania King knows she’ll have to play a much cleaner game to have any chance of pulling off this massive upset against Williams. This is the first time King has advanced to the second round of the US Open since 2011, and the first time of any grand slam since the 2013 French Open. The 25-year-old has had a very poor season to say the least and has proven to be a much better doubles player than singles.
Serena Williams won a painless first round match over Taylor Townsend that only took 16 games to decide. Serena hit 16 winners, only eight unforced errors and won 88 percent of her first serves. The scary part is that Serena still has yet to play her best tennis, as she had only one ace in the match and was averaging just 107 mph on her first serve. Serena Williams is carrying some momentum into this tournament after winning the Cincinnati Masters, but she’s been up-and-down all year especially in majors where she’s failed to make it out of the fourth round in the first three this season. However, everybody knows that the US Open is Serena's favorite tournament, as she’s won the last two years and is chasing history with a possible 18th grand slam title.
This will be the first time these two players have played one another on the tennis court.
There’s no question Serena is going to win this match, and it should be rather easy with the way Vania King has struggled with her first serve. I’d suggest taking the under in this match whatever it is, as this match shouldn’t take long at all.
