Varvara Lepchenko vs. Serena Williams 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Varvara Lepchenko and Serena Williams will meet in the third round of the 2014 US Open.

Varvara Lepchenko was able to advance after defeating Mona Barthel in the second round. It was a match that took only 16 games to be decided, as Lepchenko won 79 percent of her first serve points and limited herself to only nine unforced errors. Of course, Barthel didn’t help herself by committing 30 unforced errors and winning just 53 percent of her first serve points. The first couple of performances from Varvara Lepchenko have been quite impressive considering she failed to qualify in New Heaven and was eliminated in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters. Now are when things get real difficult for Lepchenko, as she hasn’t advanced past the third round of a major since the 2012 French Open.

Serena Williams has taken her momentum from the Cincinnati Masters and has crushed her first two opponents, playing just 29 games in her first two matches. In Serena's second round victory over Vania King, she hit 25 winners, won 88 percent of her first serve points and broke on six of her 11 attempts. However, Serena continues to struggle on her serve speed, as she averaged just 99 mph on her first serve and topped out at 117 mph. Not quite Serena numbers, and she also had five double faults in her victory over King. Getting only 56 percent of the first serves in play is also very unlike Serena. However, Serena has won 14 of her last 15 matches and still has yet to play her best tennis, which is the scary part for her opponents.

These two have met twice, and Serena Williams has won both matches in straight sets. In fact, Varvara Lepchenko has won just six games in four sets against Serena. Their last match was at this year’s Rome Masters.

Although Serena still has been a little shaky for her standards, this should be another painless victory for the defending champ. Once again, give me Serena and the under, the same combo that we hit on last match.
