Vasek Pospisil and Fabio Fognini play Thursday in the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Vasek Pospisil is coming off a five set victory over Vincent Millot that took nearly four hours to finish. Pospisil got 64 percent of his first serves in play and won 85 percent of those points. Pospisil won 70 percent of his net points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Pospisil hit 25 aces, 59 winners and had 45 unforced errors. Pospisil has shown what he’s capable of when he gets the first serve in play, but he can be beaten when he’s missing his spots and coming with a weaker second serve. Pospisil has to play a cleaner game if he hopes to advance another round. Pospisil has reached the third round of a grand slam just twice in his career. This is the furthest Pospisil has ever been in the Wimbledon.
Fabio Fognini is coming off a straight sets win over Tim Smyczek, which took just over an hour and a half. Fognini got 58 percent of his first serves in play and won 69 percent of those points. Fognini won 90 percent of his net points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Fognini hit one ace, 30 winners and had 34 unforced errors. Fognini can also play better, as he made way too many unforced errors for such a short match and wasn’t sharp on his first serve. Fognini also had four double faults in the victory. Fognini has reached the third round of a grand slam three times in his last six appearances. Fognini has made the third round of the WImbledon twice in his career.
These two have met only once which was in the 2012 Cincinnati Masters, a match that Fognini won in straight sets. This will be the first time these two have played one another on grass.
Honestly, I was more impressed with Pospisil in his opening match. However, Fognini has a huge advantage over him after finishing his match extremely quickly. With a small line, I’m taking the more rested player.
