Venus Williams and Ashleigh Barty meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Birmingham Classic.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Qiang Wang that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 76 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 71 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 12 break points. Venus got 82 percent of her first serves in play and faced just one break point. It was a rare consistent serving performance from Venus, and one that should inspire confidence moving forward. Venus has 137 career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Venus looks to win three straight matches for the first time since the Miami Open. Venus has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Jennifer Brady that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 82 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Barty has now won nine straight matches and you can just see the confidence growing as she looks for her shots more and more. Barty is being more aggressive with her offense and showing she has more than the slice and drop shot. Barty has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was 2017 Cincinnati, a match Barty won in three sets. The match took 25 games to be decided.
Venus can make this match interesting if she serves the way she did in her last match, but I wouldn’t count on it. Venus is very hit or miss with her serve and this is a terrible matchup for her with the way Barty keeps the ball in play and forces her opponent to win long rallies. We’re going to see a ton of unforced errors from Venus in this match.
Barty makes the semis and keeps her chances of becoming the top ranked player in the world alive.
