Venus Williams and Barbora Strycova meet Wednesday in the round of 32 at the 2016 Rogers Cup.
Venus Williams should be very confident heading into this tournament considering she’s fresh off a final appearance at the Stanford Classic. Venus continues to show she’s capable of playing at a high level despite being 36 years old. In fact, Venus is currently ranked sixth in the world and has a shot to make her first WTA Tour Championships since 2009. The only issue with Venus are the unforced errors, as she can get very sloppy at times and it really prevents her from putting her opponent away for good. Venus has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
Barbora Strycova is coming off a three set win over Caroline Garcia and looks for another big victory. Strycova has been a top-30 player for a full year now and heads into this match winning 12 of her last 16 matches. Strycova has shown just how effective she can be when she’s serving well and playing with confidence. The issue with Strycova has been consistency, as mistakes tend to pile up and the match can really get away from her if she isn’t careful. However, Strycova has won 14 of her last 21 sets and has to be confident entering this match. Strycova has beaten two top-10 players this year and has six overall. Strycova has won 11 of her last 16 matches on hard court.
These two have played three times in the past and Venus has won all three matches. The most recent match took place in 2015 in Doha, a match that went three sets. This will be the second match on hard court.
I’m always hesitant in backing Venus because you’re never sure what you’re going to get at this stage. Those unforced errors can really doom a match quite quickly. However, the line is extremely low and Venus has beaten Strycova in all three matches.
So, I’ll ride the hot hand and side with the confident Venus for the victory.
