American tennis superstar, Venus Williams is set to play at the 2019 WTA Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose. Venus will begin her tournament against Bethanie Mattek-Sands who is also from the United States.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands is a hugely accomplished player with most of her accomplishments occurring in doubles tennis. Mattek-Sands has won 8 Grand Slam titles in doubles tennis and continues to perform extremely well. Bethanie Mattek-Sands last played at Wimbledon where she made the quarterfinals of the Women’s doubles. That being said, Bethanie Mattek-Sands is rarely seen playing singles tennis and this could be a major task for the American. The last time that Bethanie Mattek-Sands played singles tennis was at the Australian Open in January. Singles tennis has been tough for Bethanie Mattek-Sands as she has not won a singles match in the past 12 months. I see Mattek-Sands struggling due to her lack of singles tennis.
Looking at Venus Williams, it was poor Wimbledon for the American as she was eliminated in the opening round. Venus was outclassed by Coco Gauff as she lost in straight sets. Despite her loss at Wimbledon, Venus has had a decent season as he made the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Classic and the Indian Wells Open. It is hard to see Venus Williams competing at her best but she seems to be playing well enough to compete at the top tournaments.
Venus Williams and Bethanie Mattek-Sands have played each other 4 times in the past. As it currently stands, Venus Williams has a 4-0 record against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The most recent match between these two players was in 2012 at the US Open where Venus won in straight sets. In the 4 matches, Bethanie Mattek-Sands has only won 1 set against Venus.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands has proven her ability in doubles tennis but she has always struggled in singles tennis. Mattek-Sands has not won a singles match in over 12 months and I see her struggling to compete. Venus Williams is still playing good tennis and I see her being way too strong for Bethanie Mattek-Sands in this match.
