Venus Williams and Camila Giorgi meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 62 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Venus made the match much tougher than she had to, as she had plenty of chances to close it out in two sets and avoid an extra hour of playing time. Venus has shown she still has a knack for coming away with most of the big points, but you have to question how much the 38-year-old has left in the tank after such a physical performance. Venus hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the 11th time in her last 14 appearances. Venus hasn’t lost before the third round of the US Open since 2013. Venus has won four of her last six matches on hard court.
Camila Giorgi is coming off a straight sets win over Whitney Osuigwe that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Giorgi won 59 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Giorgi won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. Giorgi would love to get a higher percentage of her first serves in play, but she’s still a hard hitter who goes for her shots and can make any player in the draw uncomfortable with her aggressiveness. When Giorgi is feeling herself, she’s a tough out for anybody. Giorgi hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the fourth time in her last six appearances. Giorgi has made the third round of the US Open just once (2013) in her career. Giorgi has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Australian Open, a match Venus won in three sets. The match took 30 games to be decided.
This is going to be a tough match for Venus, as Giorgi has the shotmaking ability to take points into her own hands and frustrate her a bit. I also question how much Venus has left in the tank, as the heat is no joke, and over three hours for a 38-year-old can’t be good. The smart money is probably on Giorgi. However, it is the US Open and this is one of those tournaments where Venus is able to dig deep often and use the crowd. Heck, we saw it in the first round when she blew the second set.
It’s a rollercoaster betting Venus, but I’ll take one more ride.
