The Line: -- Over/Under:
Venus Williams and Daria Kasatkina meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suarez-Navarro that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 73 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 78 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. It was easily one of Venus’ better serving performances in quite some time, and it’s why it resulted in one of her easier victories that didn’t include three sets. If Venus can bottle that showing, she’s capable of a deep tournament run. Venus hopes to make the fourth round of the Miami Open for the fifth time in her last six appearances. Venus has won eight of her last 10 matches on outdoor hard court.
Daria Kasatkina is coming off a straight sets win over Cori Gauff that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Kasatkina won 67 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Kasatkina won 53 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Kasatkina got a much needed victory considering she entered this tournament losing seven of her last 10 matches. Kasatkina now hopes to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the first time since winning the Kremlin Cup back in October. Kasatkina also hopes to make the fourth round of a Premier Mandatory for the fifth time in her career and first ever in Miami. Kasatkina has split her last four matches on outdoor hard court.
These two have played three times and Kasatkina has won two of those matches, including the most recent match in Indian Wells last year. Venus’ only win over Kasatkina came in the 2016 Wimbledon. All three matches went the distance.
Venus is coming off one of her sharper performances in quite some time and we all know she loves Miami and is used to the humidity given that she lives in South Florida. These conditions favor her game and the success here speaks for itself. Kasatkina is probably the better player at this stage of their careers when she’s on her game, but she’s off to a poor start to the 2019 season and one win doesn’t change the whole outlook.
I’m going to back Venus to win this match.
