Venus Williams and Julia Goerges meet in the second round of the 2016 US Open.

Venus Williams is coming off a three set victory over Kateryna Kozlova that took 30 games to decide. Venus probably should have finished her match in about an hour after dominating the first set and a half. However, Venus had her usual unforced errors take control and it turned into a lengthy and nail biter of a first round. Venus has shown flashes of great tennis even at this age but has to be more consistent with her errors in order to make a deep run. Venus has been eliminated before the third round of a grand slam twice since 2015. Venus has won five of her last eight matches on hard court.

Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Yanina Wickmayer that took 17 games to decide. Goerges’ needed a quick match to boost her confidence, as it’s been a rough 2016 season where she’s fallen out of the top-50. Goerges is capable of surprising at any time, as it wasn’t long ago when she was a top-15 player. However, Goerges has little grand slam success and hasn’t been good on hard court as of late. Goerges hasn’t made the third round of a grand slam since the 2015 French Open. Goerges has lost five of her last eight matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Wuhan Open, a match Venus won in straight sets. The match took 19 games to decide.

Venus should be able to get going after a close scare and always has the support of the New York crowd. Goerges just hasn’t shown enough recently to think she can hang in this match.

I’ll take Venus to advance to the third round.
