Sakkari vs. Venus
|Date & Time||Friday September 1, 2017, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Venus Williams and Maria Sakkari meet in the third round of the 2017 US Open.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Oceane Dodin that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 80 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Venus has had to work in both of her first two matches, but she’s dropped only a combined 15 first service points and is coming off a match in which she had just 14 unforced errors. Venus has had a great deal of success in grand slams this season, and that will continue to be the case if she continues to play clean tennis. Venus hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for a seventh straight time. Venus has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Arina Rodionova that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 66 percent of her first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari has won her first two matches in straight sets and is coming off a match in which she won 44 percent of her return points. Sakkari has had a very inconsistent year, but she has made the third round of a grand slam for the third time this season and has to like her chances if she continues to give herself break points. Sakkari hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time. Sakkari has split her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2016 Wimbledon, a match Venus won in three sets. The match took 31 games to decide.
Sakkari is no pushover, especially with how tight she played Venus a year ago. However, Venus has been a tough cookie in grand slams, and that will be the case even more here with a wide open draw and it being her home slam. The big stadium, the crowd, a young, inexperienced player like Sakkari could crumble.
Have to like Venus here.
