Venus Williams vs Mihaela Buzărnescu - 01/15/19 WTA Tour - Australian Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Venus Williams is set to begin her 2019 Australian campaign Mihaela Buzărnescu from Romania.

Mihaela Buzărnescu has had a very poor start to the 2019 season as she has lost both matches she has played. In her previous match, Mihaela Buzărnescu was beaten by Belinda Bencic in straight sets. The biggest issue for Buzărnescu during the loss was her serve. Mihaela Buzărnescu only won 48% of the points played during her serve and that allowed Bencic to break her serve on 7 occasions. This has been a constant problem for Mihaela Buzărnescu as she has lost 12 service games in her 2 matches this season. Considering her opponent, Mihaela Buzărnescu will need to improve her serve considerably if she wishes to compete.

Looking at Venus Williams, the American superstar has had a decent start to the season as she made the quarterfinals of the Auckland Open. Prior to Auckland, Venus Williams had not played since the US Open. While such a long break is concerning, Williams looked to be hitting the ball and she seems to be in good form. During her previous tournament, Williams was returning serve very well as she averaged over 4 break points won per match. It is important to note that Venus didn’t serve well while playing at Hobart so that is an area that needs improvement.

This is set to be the first time that Venus Williams and Mihaela Buzărnescu will be playing each other at a WTA event.

As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick Venus Williams to win. While Mihaela Buzărnescu is higher ranked, Venus seems to find her best at the big events. Venus Williams is very experienced and has made the final of the Australian Open twice in the past. Having played lots of tennis at this venue, I see Venus Williams winning this match and making the second round.
