Kvitova vs. Venus

The Line: -- Over/Under:
Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova meet in the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open.
Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 68 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Venus has really struggled with her second serve, but she’s won no less than 44 percent of her return points and has given herself a combined 17 break chances in her last two matches. While Venus is capable of improving in certain areas, she continues to find ways to win and has been able to dig herself out of trouble with her aggressive return. After all, Venus broke seven times in her last match. Venus hopes to make her fourth grand slam semifinal since last year and her first US Open semifinal since 2010. Venus has won eight of her last 10 quarterfinal matches overall. Venus has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.
Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Garbine Muguruza that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 77 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova has lost a combined 16 games in her last three matches and is coming off a performance in which she won 48 percent of her return points. Kvitova is clearly making up for lost time and is showing very few signs of being a player who has missed the bulk of the season due to a hand injury. Kvitova has to be riding high on confidence right now, as she picked up her first win over a top-10 player since last years China Open. Kvitova looks for her sixth career grand slam semifinal and her first since the 2014 Wimbledon. Kvitova has won six of her last eight quarterfinal matches overall. Kvitova has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Kvitova has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 Wimbledon, a match Kvitova won in three sets. Venus’ only win over Kvitova came in the 2012 Miami Masters.
It’s hard to bet against Kvitova given what she just showed us in the fourth round and the fact she’s cruised in pretty much every match before that. Throw in the head to head and Kvitova should be the favorite. However, Venus continues to dig deep and find ways to win, and she has a heavy American crowd behind her who is desperate to see her win one more grand slam title. Now that Muguruza is out of the picture, the door is wide open. I like Venus to find a way here with help from the home crowd.
Give me Venus to reach the US Open semifinals.
