|Date & Time||Friday August 31, 2018, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Venus Williams and Serena Williams meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Camila Giorgi that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 68 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 46 percent of her return points and converted on five of her 10 break points. Venus can still clean up the unforced errors and do better with her serve, but there’s no denying she looks like a different player than what she was earlier this year. Venus hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the 10th time in her last 14 tries. Venus also looks for her fourth straight fourth round appearance in the US Open. Venus has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Carina Witthoeft that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 77 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her six break points. Serena also had 13 aces in her victory, showing possible signs that the Serena of old isn’t far behind. If Serena is getting that many free points moving forward, just give her the trophy already. Serena hasn’t lost before the fourth round in a grand slam since the 2014 Wimbledon. Serena hasn’t lost before the fourth round of the US Open since 1998, which was her first ever appearance. Serena has won three of her last four matches on hard court.
These two have played 29 times and Serena has won 17 of those matches. The most recent match was in this years Indian Wells, a match Venus won in straight sets. Serena has won seven of the last 10 matches against Venus. This will be the sixth meeting in the US Open, and Serena has won three of those matches.
Serena still isn’t 100 percent, but even in her current form, she’s the favorite to win this tournament. Without Simona Halep, this is Serena’s tournament to lose, and she usually shines bright in the US Open at Arthur Ashe. Venus has found ways to win recently, has been at her best on hard court and looks much better than she has all year, but she’s still high on the unforced errors and that’s worrisome. Serena is going to make Venus play a ton of balls, and she could very well bury herself.
Serena continues the recent dominance over her sister.
