The Line: -- Over/Under:
Veronika Kudermetova and Kaia Kanepi meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Veronika Kudermetova is coming off a straight sets win over Zarina Diyas that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Kudermetova won 62 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Kudermetova won 59 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 12 break points. Kudermetova got 59 percent of her first serves in play and won nine of the last 10 games of the match to finish things up in an hour and 19 minutes. Kudermetova can still be a bit sharper with her serve overall, but this has already been a successful tournament when you consider her lack of recent success on the main tour and the fact this is just her second ever grand slam appearance. Kudermetova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Kudermetova has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
Kaia Kanepi is coming off a three sets win over Shuai Zhang that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Kanepi won 65 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Kanepi won 58 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 17 break points. Kanepi bounced back from losing a first set tiebreak to win the second set in six games and muscle her way through a competitive third set. Kanepi must clean up the six double faults and has to be much better with her second serve, but she’s found a way to beat back-to-back players who are ranked higher than her, and she’s in the third round of the French Open for the first time since 2012. Kanepi hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fifth time since 2015. Kanepi has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in Charleston of this year, a match Kanepi won in straight sets. The match took 22 games to be decided.
Kanepi probably has the edge here based on her experience and the fact she won the previous meeting last month on clay. However, Kanepi has really struggled with her serve in her first two matches and it’s going to catch up to her eventually. Kudermetova also pushed Kanepi in that first meeting and had her chances to win it. Kudermetova hasn’t been perfect, but she’s been able to win the big points and has the ability to spray winners that take the racket out of her opponents hands.
I’ll give Kudermetova the slight edge.
