Victoria Azarenka and Ajla Tomljanovic meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Victoria Azarenka is coming off a straight sets win over Alize Cornet that took 20 games to decide. Azarenka got 70 percent of her first serves in play, saved five of her six break points and hit 29 winners. Azarenka has now won eight of her last 13 matches and three of her last five losses have come against top-10 players. Azarenka isn’t back just yet, but she’s slowly making progress and becoming more consistent. Azarenka looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the fourth time since 2016. Azarenka has split her last two matches on grass court.
Ajla Tomljanovic is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 16 games to decide. Tomljanovic won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her nine break points. Tomljanovic got 47 percent of her first serves in play, saved one of her three break points and hit 20 winners with 20 unforced errors. It wasn’t the cleanest match ever, but Tomljanovic will take her second career Wimbledon victory however it comes. Tomljanovic looks to make her second career grand slam third round appearance and first since the 2014 French Open. Tomljanovic has split her last four matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was 2015 Madrid, a match Azarenka won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.
Tomljanovic has no chance in this match if she doesn’t severely bump up her first serve percentage and clean up the errors. Azarenka will have a field day attacking that weak and inconsistent serve. Azarenka is also a player who is quietly starting to put things together with her play and she’s been solid even in losses against quality players. This is a match Azarenka should win.
Look for Azarenka to make the third round of the Wimbledon for the ninth time in her career.
