|Date & Time||Monday August 13, 2018, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Azarenka -217 / Navarro +186 -- Over/Under:
Victoria Azarenka and Carla Suarez Navarro meet in the first round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.
Victoria Azarenka is still trying to find her footing since returning from her pregnancy and personal issues, as she’s split her last 12 matches and hasn’t won more than two matches in a single tournament since Miami. Azarenka is coming off a match in which she won 52 percent of her total service points and was broken four times. Azarenka has done a good job of being competitive in these matches, but you know her competitive spirit, one of the more feisty players on tour, she’s itching to put a deep run together to get back on track. This will be Azarenka’s first appearance in Cincinnati since 2015, and she won the title here back in 2013. Azarenka has won three of her last five matches on hard court.
Carla Suarez Navarro has found a nice string of success, as she’s won six of her last eight matches when you include her qualifying matches. Navarro won two matches in Montreal before losing a somewhat competitive match against Sloane Stephens. Of course, Navarro is at her best when she has her return working and she’s able to spray winners, putting real pressure on her opponent. Dictate the pace, and Navarro is a threat to make a deep tournament run for the first time in a while. Unfortunately, Navarro has lost in the first round of the Cincinnati Open in four of her seven career appearances. Navarro has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Azarenka has won both matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2009 French Open, a match Azarenka won in three sets.
Neither of these players are in the best of form, but this is a favorable match for Azarenka given that she has the power game to push around Navarro. As long as she’s not making things easy and piling up the unforced errors, Azarenka should have a field day in this match. Navarro should have a hard time getting comfortable here.
Azarenka gets a much needed victory.
