Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Garcia meet in the second round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a quarterfinal appearance in Montreal, as she ran into the buzzsaw that is Simona Halep. Garcia has now split her last eight matches overall and has had issues with her serve in matches she’s lost, as she’s coming off a match in which she won 50 percent of her total service points. When Garcia isn’t questioning her shot selection and is being the aggressor, she’s capable of being one of the toughest players on tour to beat. Garcia hopes to make the third round of a Premier 5 tournament for the sixth time in her last seven appearances. Garcia is just 2-3 in Cincinnati Open matches for her career. Garcia has split her last eight matches on hard court.
Victoria Azarenka is coming off a three sets win over Carla Suarez-Navarro that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Azarenka won 66 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Azarenka showed flashes of Azarenka of old in her victory, as she lost the first set tiebreak and came break stronger in the final two sets to seal the victory. Azarenka entered this tournament with inconsistent play, as she’s still getting her feet wet since her return, but that was a really solid performance and a much needed confidence boost. Azarenka now tries to win two matches in a single tournament for the second time since Madrid. Azarenka hopes to make the third round of a Premier 5 tournament for the first time since the 2015 Cincinnati Open. Azarenka has won four of her last six matches on hard court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
While Azarenka has shown very little consistency since her return, this is another match that should favor her. Garcia has been just as inconsistent in recent months, and she’s a subpar player when not serving well or playing with any confidence. It’s the Garcia with a pep in her step that you should fear, and right now we haven’t seen that recently. A fiery and motivated Azarenka could will her way to victory.
Give me Azarenka.
