Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

Victoria Azarenka and Dalila Jakupovic meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Victoria Azarenka enters this tournament splitting her last eight matches, as she continues to have a hard time finding her footing since returning from her pregnancy. Azarenka is coming off a loss in which she won just 55 percent of her total service points and had five double faults. The good news is Azarenka loves the US Open and has made at least the quarterfinals in each of her last four appearances. The problem is Azarenka hasn’t played in the US Open since 2015, and she’s missed six of the last nine grand slams overall. Azarenka has lost in the first of a grand slam in two of her last four appearances. Azarenka has won four of her last seven matches on hard court.

Dalila Jakupovic enters this tournament losing five of her last six matches, which a lot of those matches are failing to qualify for tournaments. Jakupovic also retired in her last match when trying to qualify for Cincinnati, so it will be interesting to see where her health is for this match. At this point, this is much needed experience for the 27-year-old Jakupovic, as this will be her second grand slam appearance. Anything after that in terms of positive play should be looked at as a bonus. Jakupovic has never made the second round of a grand slam. Jakupovic has lost three of her last four matches on hard court.

There’s no previous match between these two players.

There’s no reason to consider Jakupovic in this match, as she’s done little to nothing recently and has lost to far less players in qualifying. Azarenka hasn’t been consistently winning, but she’s shown flashes of being her normal self and still has that fiery attitude that wills her to wins often.

Azarenka in straight sets.

Pick:
Victoria Azarenka
