The Line: Victoria Azarenka -3125 / Danka Kovinic +1565 -- Over/Under:
Victoria Azarenka and Danka Kovinic meet Wednesday in the second round of the 2016 Australian Open.
Victoria Azarenka is coming off a straight sets win over Alison Van Uytvanck that took less than an hour. In the victory, Azarenka got 76 percent of her first serves in play, won 91 percent of those points and hit zero aces. Azarenka also had 10 winners and just seven unforced errors. Azarenka is clearly back in great form as she has lost just two matches since the US Open and is making very little unforced errors. The less wear and tear is also key for Azarenka, as she will need to have a lot in the tank if she hopes to get to the later rounds of this tournament. Azarenka has lost twice in the second round of a grand slam since 2013.
Danka Kovinic is coming off a straight sets win over Samantha Crawford that took just over an hour. In the victory, Kovinic got 59 percent of her first serves in play, won 82 percent of those points and hit two aces. Kovinic also had 19 winners and just 10 unforced errors. Kovinic is an up-and-comer at 21 years old who has been making her way up in the ITF Circuit. Kovinic doesn’t have much WTA success, but she has gained valuable experience playing doubles and did just pick up her first title in the Gastein Ladies. Matches like this will certainly help Kovinic’s growth as a singles player. Kovinic Kovinic has never made it out of the second round of a grand slam.
This will be the first time these two have met on the tennis court.
Kovinic can compete here as long as she keeps her unforced errors extremely low. Even then, however, Azarenka is just a mismatch and provides a lot of problems for the young Kovinic at this stage of her career. Azarenka wins but I’ll take the points simply because it provides such a short window for Victoria.
