The Line: -- Over/Under:
Victoria Azarenka and Katerina Siniakova and meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Victoria Azarenka has been hit or miss since returning to the tour, as she made the semifinals in Miami but then lost to Naomi Osaka in just 15 games. Azarenka is just 1-2 on clay court this season and those are the only three matches she’s played on this surface since the 2016 French Open. Azarenka has shown that competitive spirit and has been able to will her way to victory at times, but she’s coming off a match in which she got nothing on her serve and was broken five times. Like many top players coming off such a hiatus, it’s a process before they’re back to being the player you expect them to be. Azarenka has lost in the first round of a grand slam once since 2011. Azarenka has lost five of her last six matches on clay.
Katerina Siniakova is currently playing some of her best tennis of the season, which includes a semifinal trip in Nuremberg. Siniakova has always been a hot and cold player with inconsistent results, but she’s gained some valuable experience against quality players and has won each of her last six sets played on clay court. As long as Siniakova continues to get a high percentage of first serves in play, she has a shot in this match. The problem is Siniakova has almost never been good on the big stage. Siniakova has a chance to reach the second round of a grand slam for the fifth time in her career. Siniakova has won five of her last eight matches on clay.
This will be the first match between these two players.
Talent matters, but experience is huge in grand slam play, and Siniakova is usually a first or second round exit in every tournament she’s played in up to this point. These are the type of opponents Azarenka can bully and beat mentally, even if she doesn’t have it 100 percent physically just yet. There’s levels to this when it comes to the grand slams.
Azarenka wins in two competitive sets.
