American tennis player, Sofia Kenin has made it into the quarterfinals of the WTA Mexican Open. Kenin will now face against Victoria Azarenka from Belarus.
Victoria Azarenka won her previous match with comfort as she beat Tatjana Maria from Germany. It was a dominant display by Azarenka as she only allowed Tatjana Maria to win 3 games in the entire match. Azarenka won 86% of her service games and broke her opponents serve on 6 occasions to ensure that she would win the match in straight sets. Victoria Azarenka’s returning was especially impressive as she won close to 60% of the points played during her opponent’s serve. This will be a tougher match for Azarenka but considering her experience and form, she will be confident that she can win.
On the other side of the coin, Sofia Kenin also won her previous match comfortably as she beat Katie Boulter. Kenin won the opening set comfortably and was leading the second set when her opponent retired which granted the American the win. The 2019 season has been very successful for Sofia Kenin as she won the WTA Hobart International in January. That being said, Kenin will be tested in this match since Azarenka is a very accomplished and skilled player.
This will be the first time that Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka will be playing against each other at a WTA event.
Sofia Kenin has been very impressive over the past 12 months and has risen into a very exciting player. Azarenka, on the other hand, has not been at her peak for the past few seasons. Both Kenin and Azarenka are playing very well at this tournament but I am going to pick Sofia Kenin to win. Kenin seems like a better player in 2019 and she should be too good for Azarenka.
