Victoria Azarenka and Vera Lapko meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Indian Wells.

Victoria Azarenka is coming off a quarterfinal trip in Mexico and has now won five of her last eight matches if you include her two exhibition matches in Australia. It’s been a work in progress for Azarenka, who still isn’t fully recovered since her absence due to her pregnancy. Azarenka has shown flashes of being the player she once was, but she still has issues finishing points and can pile up the unforced errors. The good news for Azarenka is that the competitive spirit is still there, and she’s a two-time winner of this event, so maybe this could be a turning point. Azarenka has split her last eight matches on outdoor hard court.

Vera Lapko enters this tournament on a five-match losing streak and hasn’t put together a winning effort since Luxembourg back in October. Lapko has had serious trouble winning points on her second serve and she’s piled up the unforced errors as well. Lapko has always been hit or miss on the main tour, but her current struggles have to have her confidence shaken, and this isn’t the way you want to enter a big tournament with a loaded field. Even if she doesn’t win this match, Lapko needs to put together some solid games and provide something she can build on moving forward. Lapko has lost four straight matches on outdoor hard court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Azarenka may not be her normal self yet, but that fiery spirit is still there, and she’s more than capable of rolling a player like Lapko who can’t be too sure about her game right now. This is a more than favorable first round match for Azarenka to get rolling, and we’ve seen nothing from Lapko that suggest she’s going to end this drought on a big stage.

Azarenka wins in straight sets.
