Russian tennis superstar, Maria Sharapova will be playing at the 2019 WTA Mallorca Open. Maria Sharapova will begin her campaign against Viktoria Kuzmova from Slovakia.
Viktoria Kuzmova began her grass court season last week as she played at the Rosmalen Grass Court Championship in the Netherlands. It was a disappointing tournament for Kuzmova as she lost in the opening round. It was a solid clay court season for Viktoria Kuzmova as she won 54% of her matches. Kuzmova is only 21 but she has shown great maturity and skill throughout this season. Kuzmova has a record of 19-14 in 2019. The grass court season is a strength for Viktoria Kuzmova as she is very strong on this surface. Viktoria Kuzmova’s grass court record is 10-7. This will be a relatively tough opening round fixture since Kuzmova since she is playing against a former Wimbledon champion.
Maria Sharapova has been injured for the majority of 2019 and this tournament marks her return from a 5-month absence. Sharapova last played at the WTA St Petersburg Open which was in January. Such a long absence may impact Sharapova’s performance in this match since the Russian superstar has had very little match time. Prior to her injury, Maria Sharapova looked in good form which is evident by her record in 2019 which stands at 6-2. Sharapova is a very accomplished grass court player and her record on this surface is exceptional. Sharapova’s grass court record is currently 82-19. Sharapova has won multiple tournaments on grass including Wimbledon and the Birmingham Classic. Sharapova’s record in exceptional but she may not be at her best since she has not played in 5 months.
This will be the first time that Viktoria Kuzmova and Maria Sharapova will be playing each other at an ATP event.
Maria Sharapova has been an outstanding player for over a decade and if she was 100% fit, I would suggest that she would be good enough to win this match. That being said, Sharapova has not played in a long time and it is hard to see her playing at her best. Viktoria Kuzmova has been in good touch and I see the Slovak being good enough to defeat Maria Sharapova.
