Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Madison Keys will play Wang Qiang at the WTA Elite Trophy in China.

Madison Keys started her tournament with a win as she beat Daria Kasatkina in straight sets. During that win, Madison Keys returned serve exceptionally well as she won over 55% of the points played during Kasatkina’s service games. In total, Madison Keys won 67% of her opponent’s service games. While she returned serve well, Keys didn’t serve particularly well as she allowed her opponent to win 3 break points. Keys will need to improve her serve as Wang Qiang is an exceptional baseline player who returns serve well.

On the other side of the coin, Wang Qiang had a poor opening fixture as she lost to Daria Kasatkina in 3 sets. There were many positive for Wang in that defeat as she won 8 break points. The dynamics of this tournament has established a scenario where Wang will make the semifinals if she beats Madison Keys in straight sets. This tournament is playing played in Wang Qiang’s home country and she has been receiving great support all tournament. With Keys struggling with her serve, Wang will feel she has a great chance to win this match as she has been returning serve exceptionally well.

Wang Qiang and Madison Keys have played twice in the past with Keys winning on both occasions. The most recent match was at WTA Doha this season where Keys won in straight sets. The other match was at this season’s Australian Open where Keys won in 3 sets. While the head-to-head statistics are one-sided, both of these matches are prior to the US Open after which Wang has had an impressive run of form and Keys has struggled with injury.

While Madison Keys played well in her opening match, I see her losing. Wang Qiang has been outstanding lately and I think she will be good enough to win in front of her home crowd.
